Between optional boss fights and the infinite number of maps in the Item World, there’s definitely a lot to level for.
Exploiting the systems behind Disgaea 2 is probably required to really get into the insanely high level postgame stuff the grind isn’t for me, but it definitely gives the game a growing sense of power and scope that few RPGs can match. Whether this is engaging or not is really up to you, but it’s never necessary for the main storyline. Why not throw your enemies at each other to boost their levels to some ridiculous number and then chip away at them while standing on an invincibility tile? This is a game where levelling generic units enough unlocks the same units with better stats, encouraging players to reset their levels and go through the process again. Even when you need to fall back on grinding (and this is a Disgaea game, so you inevitably will), the game gives you the tools to creatively turn your knowledge of the gameplay mechanics into sweet, sweet experience points. It feels like each stage’s bonus gauge fills faster, constantly rewarding players with extra cash and loot for setting up combos and destroying Geo Panels to make multi-coloured chains of destruction. Other than this unfortunate bit of bureaucracy, Disgaea 2 progresses much smoother than the original, with a more consistent difficulty curve. The characters poke fun at this unnecessarily complicated process, but it’s not so funny for the players forced to constantly battle through subpoenas and I can see why this system was dropped in later entries. The catch is that actually ending up with a felony requires diving into the item world within the court summons the accused character receives and fighting your way to the Dark Court inside. Instead, the cast of Disgaea 2 are occasionally charged with arbitrary offences that will increase their experience gain by one percentage at a time (up to a maximum of 300). While the first game had residents that caused items to raise experience gains, Disgaea 2’s big way of boosting your characters is much more tedious. One annoying addition is Disgaea 2’s felony system. Stumbling across these things adds some variety and can be incredibly rewarding.

Each level might contain a secret gate leading to hidden treasures, towns full of Innocents or a place to buy bribes so officials will let you create new characters, change the difficulty or switch the store’s stock of items. Every floor still takes a bit too long to clear to be worth the effort early on, but the exploration is made a bit more interesting by Disgaea 2 doubling down on the random part of these random maps. Also like the original is the fact that the systems of subduing, combining and moving residents aren’t explained well and there’s an expectation that players memorise exactly what each resident does.

Like in the original game, every item contains a series of random maps that power up the items when cleared, especially when they contain residents that need to be subdued for the stats they add. That said, there are some minor mechanical differences, especially when it comes to the game’s Item World. While Disgaea breaks the rules of a strategy RPG, the sequel plays by the same new rulebook and lacks the same impact.
Disgaea introduced all of these bizarre concepts that turn the ideas behind a strategy RPG on their head, but the sequel sticks too closely to these same ideas.
The look and feel of Disgaea 2 should be instantly familiar to anyone who played the original, which is its biggest strength and weakness. Despite a mostly new cast, Disgaea 2 is essentially the same game.

Disgaea wasn’t bound by the conventions of the genre figuring out how to flip over Geo Panels and exploit the passive bonuses they bring practically required playing it like a puzzle game instead and led to numerous creative map layouts. While Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics were telling serious stories about war, Disgaea sold itself as a comedy with a premise as ridiculous as the grind to level 9999. The original Disgaea took a long time to click with me, but its weird mechanics like throwing around stacks of characters and powering up items by beating up the enemies that live inside them made it a breath of fresh air for the genre.

Disgaea 2 PC is still a very strong strategy RPG, but it’s one hell of a time commitment. While NIS’s ports have improved significantly since the first game’s messy launch on Steam, does the gameplay of Disgaea 2 PC represent a similar jump in quality? The answer is no, not really, but I enjoyed rediscovering the odd charms of this complex series and coming to the realisation that I absolutely don’t have time for it anymore.
